After the end of the socialist regime in 1989 the hungarian coal mines were closed, although many socialist industrial towns’ subsistence was built on these mines. The system changed, capitalism took over and the only goal was to increase production leaving many people unemployed.
The industrial city’s that were once the perfect example of the communist production started to fade away, the lack of job opportunities after the shut down of the mines were almost zero. The younger generation left these city’s leaving the older retired mine workers behind.
My grandfather who used to work in one of the biggest hungarian mines in Komló always seemed very nostalgic about his work there. He almost died in one of the mines but his entusiasm for the system and his work there never left him. My main question that lead my series was if there is even any difference between political systems or is it just time passing by.
